GST Registration, Return Filing & Notices

GST registration is mandatory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower limits apply in special category states). It is required regardless of turnover for inter-state supply of goods and for most sellers on Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho.

After registration, every GSTIN must file returns even when there are no sales. Missed returns attract late fees and interest, block e-way bills and can lead to cancellation. We file every return, reconcile your purchases with GSTR-2B and alert you before each due date.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST return due dates?

Monthly filers file GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the next month. Quarterly (QRMP) filers file GSTR-3B by the 22nd or 24th of the month after the quarter, depending on their state. Dates can be extended by notification.

Do I have to file returns if there were no sales?

Yes. A nil return must still be filed for every period. Missing nil returns attracts a late fee and can lead to cancellation of your GSTIN.

How long does GST registration take?

Usually 3–7 working days after Aadhaar authentication. If the officer raises a query or orders physical verification, it can take longer. We handle any query reply for you.

My GST registration was cancelled. Can it be restored?

Often, yes. A revocation application can be filed after clearing pending returns and dues, within the time allowed. Send us the cancellation order and we will check your options.

How much is the late fee for filing GSTR-3B late?

₹50 per day (₹20 per day for a nil return), capped between ₹500 and ₹10,000 depending on turnover, plus 18% yearly interest on tax paid late. See our guide: GSTR-3B late fee and interest.

What documents do I need for GST registration?

PAN, Aadhaar and photo of the owner, partners or directors, proof of the business address and bank proof, plus the deed or incorporation certificate for firms and companies. Full list: GST registration documents.

What is the QRMP scheme?

Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore can file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly instead of monthly, while paying tax monthly through PMT-06. It means fewer returns and lower filing effort.

Can I claim input tax credit on all my purchases?

Only on purchases used for business, supported by a valid invoice, where the supplier has reported the invoice so it appears in your GSTR-2B, and which are not in the blocked list under section 17(5).

Who has to file GSTR-9?

GSTR-9 is the annual return for regular taxpayers. It is optional for businesses with turnover up to ₹2 crore. Businesses above ₹5 crore also file the GSTR-9C reconciliation statement.

Do I need GST to sell on Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho?

In most cases, yes. Sellers supplying goods through e-commerce platforms generally need GST registration, and the platform collects TCS that you can claim in your returns.

What happens if I ignore a GST notice?

The officer can pass an order without hearing you, raising a demand with interest and penalty, and in some cases cancel your registration. Always reply before the date in the notice.

Can I switch from monthly to quarterly returns?

Yes, if your turnover is up to ₹5 crore. The option is chosen on the GST portal during the opt-in window before the start of a quarter.
